Naust

The room

Naust was the boat store when the building was a works — the wide sliding door still opens onto the pier, and now it is the shortest route in the hotel from bed to fjord. Concrete floor, board ceiling, a bed built in Bergen, and a window seat the length of one wall.

The bathroom is finished in local slate. Off it, behind a glazed door, is a small wood-fired sauna for two with a bench, a stove, and a bucket. We light it for you on request; there is a cold-water hose and a ladder into the fjord ten steps away.

Because it sits at water level, Naust is the room most affected by weather — which our regulars consider the entire point. On a still morning the door stays open through breakfast.
